Bel Mag: a pioneer in the extraction of marine magnesium in Brazil

magnésio marinho

The magnesium commercialized by Bel Mag originates in the ocean off the coast of Balneário Barra do Sul, Santa Catarina. This location has been carefully chosen for the extraction of magnesium compounds of an exceptional quality! In this article, you will learn about the events that led to the Bel Mag being found and how the company was able to establish itself as a major marine magnesium producer in South America. Keep reading to find out!

Keeping an eye on the well-being of others

Our fascination with magnesium started with Professor Reinaldo Spitzner (1917-2010). Reinaldo Spitzner was a visionary with a passion for scientific research and that sought out solutions capable of improving the well-being of others: During the course of his research, this chemical engineer from Paraná became fascinated with the chemical element magnesium and came across an opportunity to extract it from seawater.

In order to extract the magnesium, he tested marine waters at several points along the Brazilian coast, seeking the most ideal conditions for extracting magnesium from seawater. It was on Salinas beach, in the municipality of Balneário Barra do Sul in Santa Catarina, that Spitzner found seawater with the ideal properties for obtaining magnesium.

Professor Reinaldo Spitzner was a friend of the businessman Ludovico Baltasar Buschle (1918-2009) and, given the great opportunity that had emerged in obtaining magnesium, founded Buschle & Lepper’s Barra do Sul subsidiary together in 1970. At the end of the same decade, at a library in Sorbonne, Paris, Professor Spitzner came across studies on the benefits of magnesium for the human organism, which were led by the physician Pierre Delbet. From that moment on, he sought to improve the extraction of magnesium compounds and continuously strived to gain new knowledge about their benefits to human health.

Development of magnesium compounds

After carrying out further studies into the field and developing a thorough understanding of the role that magnesium plays in more than 300 enzymatic processes, Professor Spitzner began producing magnesium crystals using magnesium chloride for the purpose of supplementing the presence of this mineral in the human body.

In order to verify its effects on the body, he ingested solutions himself that were prepared with magnesium crystals on a daily basis. Over time, Spitzner further developed magnesium compounds extracted from seawater was able to study and optimize a wide range of applications.

Applications for magnesium compounds

As we mentioned earlier in the blog, marine magnesium offers an exceptional level of versatility in production processes used for magnesium compounds, thereby allowing compounds with a wide range of physical and chemical properties to be developed: different levels of reactivity, different particle sizes and densities, ranging from extra light to heavy, all with a high degree of purity.

With all these possibilities, marine-derived magnesium compounds can be used in a wide variety of applications, from the most technical and robust uses, such as the production of rubbers, adhesives, plastics, paper and cellulose, to the finest applications, including in the food industry, supplements, pharmaceutical ingredients, and as part of the formula used in cosmetics.
